Research Experience for Undergraduates & Graduates (REU/G)

Over the past decade, there has been increasing recognition that the ocean and the ocean-land interface are the sources of organisms and chemicals that can profoundly affect human health. The University of Miami's NSF-NIEHS Oceans and Human Health (OHH) Center involves the interactions between oceanographic and biomedical scientists. The OHH Center also has an Annual Research Experience for Undergraduates & Graduates (REU/G) for 2 students (a preference is given to undergraduates and masters students).

The REU/G students will participate in one of three active University of Miami OHH Center Research Projects: 1) Recreational Microbes (Contact Dr. Helena Solo-Gabriele); 2) Toxic Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) (Contact Dr. Larry Brand); and 3) Harmful Algal Bloom Genomics (Contact Dr. Gary Hitchcock.) Each Research Project is led by the interdisciplinary collaboration of a biomedical sciences researcher and an oceanographic researcher, with participation by investigators representing engineering, remote sensing, physical and biological oceanography, genomics, microbiology, and epidemiology; the students will be mentored and directly evaluated by the specific Research Project Principal Investigators (www.rsmas.miami.edu/groups/ohh/). The students will also have the opportunity to interact with the three University of Miami OHH Center Facilities Cores: 1) Remote Sensing (Contact Dr. Peter Minnett); 2) Genomics (Contact Dr. Jack Fell); and 3) Algal Cultures (Contact Dr. Kelly Rein).

In the REU/G, there will also be opportunities to participate extensively in field sampling and environmental modeling. All students will be involved in the writing process as reports and publications are prepared, as well as performing literature searches in specific research areas. Finally, students will have the opportunity to actively participate in the NSF NIEHS OHH Center activities such as informal laboratory meetings and more formal scientific conferences and outreach activities; they will also be encouraged to present their research in appropriate scientific venues within and outside of the University of Miami.
After making contact with an individual OHH Center Scientist with whom you wish to work, please complete the REU/G Application Form . In addition to this form, applicants must submit the following:

  • Official copies of all college transcripts
  • ONE letter of recommendation (Letters from college faculty and/or research advisors preferred)

  • All items due to Julie Hollenbeck by May 1, 2009.
