Reaching Out to Tomorrow's Scientists Today
The future of science is in the hands of our youngest students—those in elementary, middle and high schools. Rosenstiel School has a variety of programs in place to excite and educate both the educators and the students about marine and atmospheric science.
For Educators
Summer programs such as the Atmospheric and Marine-Based Interdisciplinary Environmental Health Training (AMBIENT) project, Project INSTAR (Investigating Nature Through Science Teacher Active Research), or Rosenstiel School's Scientist/Teacher Mentor Program on the Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas all provide hands-on opportunities for teachers to acquaint themselves with marine and atmospheric science such that student curriculums are meaningfully enhanced. Rosenstiel School also is involved in Florida GLOBE International, which trains teachers at K-12 schools to set up environmental monitoring sites at or near their schools to improve science education and environmental data collection in South Florida
For Students
IMPACT
Rosenstiel School, in partnership with the
Miami Museum of Science
and Miami-Dade county public schools, annually hosts a summer program
as part of the Integrated Marine Program and College Training
(IMPACT)
where low-income, first-generation college-bound students are paid
stipends as they study oceanography, biology, ecology, meteorology,
geology, and resource management in a hands-on, interactive environment
for six weeks.
NOSB
With
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution,
the school annually
hosts the National Ocean Sciences Bowl
(NOSB) Florida Regional
Competition— “Jeopardy”-like competition to test
students' knowledge of math and science.

Women In Science
Additionally the Rosenstiel School has partnered with the
American Association of University Women and Miami-Dade county
public schools annually to host a day of interactive learning
for 6th and 7th grade girls. The 2009 Exploring Marine Science
Day will be February 28th. Deadline for registration is February
14th and space is limited.

Environmental Immersion Day
Another partner is
Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden,
which co-hosts
Environmental Immersion Day. Fairchild awards scholarships for
students to participate in this days as part of the Fairchild
Challenge for High Schools, an environmental education/outreach
competition. Student groups visit the Rosenstiel School and other
environmental sites for a day of comprehensive, hands-on learning.
ENVIROTHON
Each year, Rosenstiel School is involved along with Miami Dade Public Schools and Monroe County Schools in a student competition, the Canon
ENVIROTHON.
The Rosenstiel School AMBIENT program is one of the local groups to sponsor the regional competition, providing an Environmental Health Station. University of Miami researchers create student packets filled with materials and activities related to local environmental issues. The UM researchers then attend the Annual Regional Envirothon Competition and participate with the local student teams.
Year-Round Outreach
The Rosenstiel School participates in community events such
as career and environmental fairs, beach clean-ups and fishing
tournaments to promote education and environmental and marine
conservation.
Interactive tours of the Rosenstiel School campus are available
to small groups interested in marine and atmospheric research.
Please fill out the tour request form if interested in visiting.
